In the Family Courts of New York children of all ages are represented by attorneys. Sometimes their parents have been accused of abuse or neglect, other times their parents have a dispute about their custody or visitation rights. Some children have been charged as juvenile delinquents. The attorneys who represent them are aptly called Attorneys for the Child. These attorneys provide direct representation to their clients but are allowed to substitute judgment in certain circumstances. The AFCs who serve on the panel for the Second Department of the Appellate Division are paid $158 per hour for their legal services. Because they are independent contractors many of them still maintain a separate private practice.
Attorneys of every background bring something valuable to the AFC Panel — and when an attorney shares a cultural, linguistic, or religious connection with a client, it can make communication and trust even stronger.
To help expand our panel along with several affinity bar associations, we are co-sponsoring a special recruitment event at
Hofstra Law School on Thursday, September 24, 2026, from 6:00–8:00 PM.
Come learn how to become an Attorney for the Child, meet current panel members and family court jurists, explore our mentorship program and connect with practitioners dedicated to supporting children and families across Nassau County and beyond. All are welcome! Register here
If you can’t make it, feel free to pass the info along to your network. Thanks so much for your time — we hope to see you there!
